“Oh, sweet Jesus, you have to taste this.” I know I should probably lower my voice, but when something’s this delicious, I have trouble with self-control. And while this filet might be the most delicious thing I’ve ever eaten, something pretty delicious is sitting across from me. When Cooper opens his mouth and lets me slide a bite of my steak in, I have trouble not leaning in to lick off the little bit of sauce that clings to his lower lip with my tongue.

I move my fork and let him finish chewing. The face he’s making is nothing short of orgasmic, and I’m mesmerized by the way he squeezes his eyes shut before he lets out a groan I feel in some very inconvenient places.

“Take a sip of the whiskey now.” I hand him my glass and he takes a sip, his eyes widening.

“The char…” He closes his eyes again. “That’s so good.”

“Right?” I cut another bite of the filet for myself. “The smokiness of the meat and the smokiness of the whiskey…” I bring my fingers to my lips in a chef’s kiss. “Do you think you and your brothers could ever make something like this? Please say yes so I can eat this every night.” I put the morsel of meat in my mouth and slowly chew.

“I hope so. I’m not a restaurant expert, but Charlie knows how to run the front of the house. I think the key’s going to be hiring the right people in the kitchen. And sourcing ingredients. I love that so much of this is local.” He takes a look around the restaurant, with its candlelit tables and dark wood. “I love everything about this place, I think.” His eyes come back to focus on me again. “I’m starting to think we can really do this, Hadley. That I can do this. Thanks for helping me get there. I’m having a good time doing this with you.” His words are humble and sweet, and I feel another one of my walls start to crumble. “Do you want another bite of this pork belly?” He loads up his fork and holds it up for me.

I’ve already tasted everything on Cooper’s plate, but I open my mouth again and let him feed me. We’ve been sharing everything this way all night and I’m not about to complain about the way it’s made us slide our chairs closer, moving until we’re nearly side by side at this tiny table. It’s the most romantic place I think I’ve ever been, and Cooper’s been opening doors and pulling out chairs for me since we met in the hotel hallway.

“You’ve got a little…” Cooper reaches out to cup my chin, his thumb running along my lower lip.

I suck in a sharp breath as his hand lingers there for a second. When he pulls his hand back, he slides his thumb in his mouth, and I nearly melt into a puddle right there. Cooper seems almost as shocked as I am, and we stare across the table at each other, both frozen.
