Here’s the trick: Stay in the moment. When I’m putting on my boots, I’m just putting on my boots. I notice thoughts of dread and bring my mind back to my boots. That helps me get out the door.

How to Make Yourself Move

When motivation wanes, I can’t always make myself move. I try and rebel. That’s my nature. It helps to know yourself. Working with your natural tendencies is more successful than fighting them.

This reminds me of Zen work at retreats. Ed first studied meditation at Zen Mountain Monastery with Zen Master John Daido Loori. Ed’s first work assignment was kitchen duty. He found that chopping vegetables and making food brought him joy. As soon as Zen Master John Daido Loori discovered how much Ed loved it, they reassigned him. The idea was that it needed to be a challenge. Maybe Daido thought Ed was taking the wrong medicine, that Ed needed to experience pain as well as joy. Perhaps your resistance is the inquiry. Perhaps you need to push yourself in order to grow.
