Psychologist Ellen Langer gave her research assistants specific instructions to conduct a study on human nature. They used that long line at the library copy machine for their lab.

It was a clinical study, so there were three “control” tests. In the first version, the research assistants made a request of people in the copy machine line using only these words, “Excuse me, I have 5 pages. May I use the Xerox machine?” Those students must have been pretty good-natured and patient there at Harvard back in the late ‘70s because 60% of the people in line let the assistant cut in with that request.
