I ended up at the Sugar Shack shortly after leaving Rory. My mind spinning. I needed to figure out where the hunter would take Josie. The city was a warren of empty buildings, she could be in many places. My hope sank into the mud of despair as I tried to work out a plan of attack. I knew Ethan would do everything to find her but sometimes the police just didn’t have the ins and outs of the city the way supernaturals did. I texted Benji and asked him to think of anywhere he thought a hunter could stash someone without attracting attention.

Benji sent me a coded message back. The police were still talking to Sarah. One of the other witches had woken up but at the start of the fight she had been hit from behind and knocked out cold. She didn’t remember a thing, except a flash of light.

Of course, I couldn’t catch a break. I ordered food and retreated to my favourite booth. Pete would have had some sage words of advice for me. He’d tell me not to get involved, let the police do their job and right after that he’d go out and look for Josie himself. I couldn’t shake off the feeling that I was missing something important. I knew hindsight was a thing, but I wished I’d had forward sight, like a glimpse into the future. I dropped my burger onto my plate. Fuck. Of course. Brad said his daughter was having issues, she was seeing things and telling them things they didn’t know. I wondered if she might see future events or if she could use her new powers to find Josie.

I texted Brad and asked if I could come to him to speak with Jessie.

“You want those doughnuts?” Emerald was on shift for the afternoon.

“Yeah, thanks, to go if possible,” I said shoving the rest of my burger into my mouth. I swallowed down the last of my water as Emerald handed me the bag.

“You okay Lucy?” Emerald asked.

I shook my head my voice came out with a crackle like I was one breath away from losing control and tipping over from grief to rage. “Josie’s been taken.”

She nodded. “I heard. Cops talk a lot. I’m sure they’ll find her.”

There was no conviction to her words. She and I both knew the longer the hunter had Josie the less likely it’d be that I’d find her alive. I shot Emerald a flat smile.

“I’m not, sure,” I replied taking the bag of food with me.

Harrold might know something. He’d been at the last two scenes. I just had to find him and get him to tell me what he knew. I was about to send out my magic in the carpark in broad daylight without caution when my phone buzzed.

Brad texted his address and asked me to meet him there in half an hour. It was over the other side of town. No time to find Harrold now. I walked over to the shifter hiding behind the dumpster.
