Those who had bikes rode around with their signs to help spread the word.

Groups of children gathered to take their campaign on the road.

The children called out something, and the woman laughed. The knot in Maggie’s stomach was still tight, but her father pressed a smile onto his face, and Maggie chose that moment to escape out the back with her deliveries.

“Why aren’t you out here with us?” snooty Jennifer asked. Maggie had tried to sneak her bike around the side of the store, but Jennifer had spotted her.

“I’m protesting later,” Maggie said. “Somewhere else.”

“Yeah,” Charlie said, “she can’t strike against her own father.”

“But she doesn’t have to work for him,” Jennifer said and stuck out her tongue.

Maggie was so shocked that she didn’t know what to say at first. Then her temper flared. “What do you know about it?” she demanded. “You get everything served to you on a silver platter. And why is my dad the enemy? He didn’t make chocolate prices go up.”

“Do you see any five-cent candy bars in there?” Jennifer taunted her, pointing at the front door of the shop. She made a noise as if she’d stepped in dog doodoo. “So much for solidarity.”
