How’d you get this old photo?

I want to know for real, but I also want Jordan to know that he isn’t freaking me out—at least not anymore. Now I’m just pissed. We wait for an answer, but I start to think it isn’t coming. I stare at my phone as Uncle Salvatore pulls out his.

“What’s Jordan’s last name?”

“Ryan.”

Uncle Salvatore and Uncle Domenico stare at me before Uncle Salvatore says something.

“Irish?”

“I guess. He knows who I am, but we never got into his family. His ancestry didn’t come up.”

I force myself not to look away, but it gets super uncomfortable when Mama joins us. She’s Auntie Carlotta’s best friend, so I know she came to check on us both. Mama rests her hand on my shoulder.

“You were just having fun together.”

Fucking hell. Just what does she know? This is so fucking humiliating. I would have preferred my parents to never ever think of me having sex and that any children Matteo and I have are the product of immaculate conception—just like me and my brothers.

All I can do is nod. Uncle Salvatore unlocks his phone and taps a contact. I can guess who he’s calling. They all have each other on speed dial. Another fucked-up part of our lives.

“Enrique, who’d Joaquin give or sell the photo of Matteo to?”

The call isn’t on speaker, but now that someone turned off the movie, it’s possible to hear since Uncle Salvatore doesn’t press the phone to his ear.

“Always a pleasure, Sal. Why can’t your family call during business hours?”

“Answer me. Someone got a hold of it and is trying to scare Maria and me.”

“Maria? Why her?”

“They’re together. You already know that, Enrique. Don’t play games. Tres J’s supposedly helped the Kutsenkos and us. Then Alejandro fucks with a woman in my family. You’re having a hard time keeping your word that women and children stay out of our business. Who?”

“I don’t know. Let me call you back.”

“Put me on with Joaquin.”

Enrique snorts.

“I’ll call you back in a few.”

The call ends, and we’re all left looking at each other. I don’t want to say anything to upset Sera or Uncle Sal, who are standing next to each other. I think everyone else feels the same way since we wait in silence for at least five minutes until Uncle Salvatore’s phone rings. My uncle shows us his phone before he answers. It’s Joaquin. He speaks before Uncle Salvatore can.

“I didn’t give or sell it to anyone. My accounts were hacked today. I’ve been dealing with it all fucking day. That’s not the only photo that doesn’t need to see the light of day.”

My nose curls. Except for a very few, like the one of Matteo, no man from any syndicate takes and saves photos like that. It’s incriminating. He means women.

“Any idea who?”

“Yeah. And you won’t like it.”

Uncle Salvatore’s barely holding onto his temper.

“Who, Joaquin?”

“Sergei.”

I sweep my gaze over everyone gathered together. There’s no way the bratva is connected to Aunt Sylvia.

“Why?”

“I don’t know. How’d you know, anyway?”

“Someone sent it to Maria, and we don’t know how he got it.
