Lucas screamed as hard as he could, until his throat started to burn and his chest hurt with every breath. Finally, after an eternity of uncertainty, his eyes began to adjust. Gray figures took shape around him, a wall, a pillar. Everything was unfolding more with each blink.
His nose, on the other hand, did not seem to have the same conviction to adapt to the putrid scent that surrounded him. It was a smell so intense it made him dizzy. Lucas tried to hold his breath, but every so often he was forced to take a deep breath, which only made matters worse.
In the distance, an incessant drip echoed. The floor was covered with water and the walls were wet and sticky. With effort, he managed to find support in them to get back on his feet.
Just a few feet in front of him, there was a black figure lying on the ground. From a distance, it looked like a statue, but as he approached, he realized that it was something else, not quite sure what, he crouched.
A few seconds passed before he could see with detail what lay in front of him. It was a person, small, in a fetal position looking straight at the wall. Lucas fell back, almost screaming, but the pain in his throat contained the cry, giving him a fit of cough instead.
Lucas coughed until his eyes filled with tears. He was sure that whoever was in front of him was a boy, younger than him, wearing a t-shirt and shorts; he was also skinny, very skinny. The nauseating smell was coming from the child.
Heâs sleeping. He must be sleeping, he thought, trying to calm himself. He stretched out his leg and gave the boy a little kick with the tip of his foot. The boy didnât flinch.
âHey,â Lucas whispered. âWake up. We have to get out of here.â
Lucas kicked him again, a little stronger this time, still unanswered. He knelt on the damp floor and put a hand on the boy's shoulder. It was cold and hard; his t-shirt felt viscous with a stench that had become unbearable.
As soon as Lucas finished turning him around, a pale face with empty sockets stared back at him. What was left of the boyâs skin stretched over his bones like loose clothing, his mouth open with larvae crawling between his teeth.
All of Lucas's muscles were instantly paralyzed; a sense of vertigo seized him. He had never seen a dead person in real life. Only in movies, and no matter how realistic the makeup or the dolls were, he could always notice it was not a real person.
This was totally different altogether. It was somebody like him, who at one point used to play with his friends in the park, with fears and hopes in the future, and now had worms eating him all over.
Lucas stood up and ran to the opposite direction with his hands up in the air until he hit the wall. He was drenched with water to his knees, the mixture of horror and wet cold made him shudder.
