I’m not used to being a regular diner at the diner. It’s weird to be sitting at a table and being waited on instead of on my feet and bringing food out.

Weirder still that I’m sitting with Max Duke. The hottest man I’ve ever met. The man who just fingered me to orgasm half an hour ago. The man who knows my darkest desires and my lifelong dreams. And insists he wants to give me both.

And the man who is my boss.

We’re looking on his tablet at some different inventory and point-of-sale software options. And waiting for our lunch. I’m so excited about opening the bookstore, but I’m also very distracted by the thoughts of what we were just doing in it.

As we discuss the software options, I can’t help but sneak glances at Max. I think of the intimate way he touched me earlier. The way he played me like an instrument. I had no idea it could be like that, even in my dark fantasies. I’m lost in thought when I feel his hand on my thigh. I startle, look at his hand and then look up at him, and he’s smirking at me.

“You’re a little distracted, Cherry. By any chance, are you thinking about what we did earlier?” he asks.

I bite my lip. “Maybe a little,” I reply, my voice barely above a whisper.

He leans in closer to me. “Are you thinking about my fingers inside you?”

I can feel the heat radiating from my face as I look up at him. “Yes,” I admit.

“Me too,” Max tells me, taking a long drink of his iced tea.

I shoot him a look, meaning to tell him he’s incorrigible. Instead, we lock eyes and I feel my pussy grow wet again. It’s like this primal need to have sex with him has flooded my system, and it’s making me crazy with lust.

“Stop looking at me,” I beg. “You’re making me more distracted.”

He just smiles like the cat that ate the canary. “I have no idea what you mean.”

Mary, my diner boss, stops at the table with our food. She’s giving me an unreadable look. “Mary, you know Max,” I say, though the most notorious bad boy Tempest has ever seen needs no introduction.

“I remember Max,” she replies dubiously.

“Mary,” Max smiles. “I’ve traveled the country and no one makes a lemon meringue better than yours.”

“Quit kissing my butt, Duke. I hear you’re taking my best waitress away from me.”

I duck my chin to my chest. I hate that I’m leaving her. She’s been so good to me. But she would be the first to tell me to follow my dreams. And running a bookstore has always been my dream.

“I’ll make sure I bring her by several times a week for lunch,” he promises.

“I’m not going anywhere. I’m just down the street,” I laugh. “Seriously, Mary. Now I can order all the cozy mystery books your heart desires.”

Luckily, Rachel, one of our other waitresses, has been wanting more hours. She’s thrilled to have my shifts, so I didn’t even have to give two weeks notice.
