This place is nuts. Every single bottle is perfectly lined up in a row. I’d even go as far as to swear that they’ve been color-coded. Not alphabetized, at least. Still, it would drive me nuts to stare at that every morning.

Hell, it’d drive me nuts listening to Kristen’s prissiness non-stop.

I throw a towel around my waist and tie it off. Slick my hair back and ruffle up my beard. It sure feels weird as hell to be standing half-naked in this woman’s house. I can’t say it’s a learned habit. When my friends were out trying to impress girls, I was usually looking after mom or dad. Then, I enlisted, so I pretty much missed all the usual horseplay in my early twenties.

“So, what do you do up at that ranch all day?” Kristen’s question slaps me in the face before I’m even fully out of the bathroom. She’s perched on a stool in the kitchen looking shifty as hell, but by now, I’m a little used to her weird behavior.

“What do you mean by that?” Something smells amazing, and I follow my nose to the kitchen. There’s a steaming pot of mulled wine on the stove, and my stomach gnaws in approval. Next to the stove, there’s a plate of sugar cookies that match her Christmas nails in design. It reminds me of Christmases spent with mom when Kane and I were younger. “Mind if I join you?” I cast a glance at Kristen. “Just while I dry off. Then, I’m gone. Promise.”

“Aren’t you going to get dressed first?” she asks.

I can’t sus out her intentions. Her words come with zero emotion or expression. Shit, I can’t work out my intentions. On paper, this girl is a bombshell. I’ve always loved a woman with curves, and Kristen is the definition of an hourglass built by an artisan. But man, does she grate on me sometimes. “Well, you didn’t give me much chance,” I say, opening a cabinet without waiting for an invitation. “And you didn’t answer my question.” I check another cabinet, before Kristen clears her throat.

“Second cabinet from the microwave.”

I follow her instructions and take a mug from the designated cabinet. Pour a little mulled wine into the thing and take a good whiff. “This smells fantastic,” I say, taking my time to sip and savor the stuff. I cautiously eye the sugar cookies, and she laughs.

“Go right ahead.”

I hungrily snatch up a cookie and take a bite between sips. “Holy shit, these are good.” She winces. “Sorry,” I say. “For the cussing.”

“Don’t worry about it. And what I meant was, are you stabling people’s horses? Raising cattle?”

I shake my head as I sip on the wine.

“So, what do you do for money, then?”

She catches me mid-gulp, and I practically choke on the crumbs of my cookie. Though, by the looks of it, she regrets it immediately, burying her face in her hands as she leans into the breakfast bar. “Wow,” I splutter. “That’s pretty blunt.”

“Sorry… that’s not…” She trails off.
