HILL COUNTY DETENTION CENTER fitted at least half the

description Brett imagined when he thought of prison. The lawyer, Collins, had proved to be a complete jerk, but at least hed told Brett how to apply for a visit.

The visiting cubicle had phones either side of a thick glass viewing window, set in a bench just wide enough to lean on. Chairs stood bolted to the floor either side of the glass, the privacy panels not as wide as they really needed to be. Brett sat down and waited, aware of how the guards seemed to stand oh so close. Sweat slicked his palms, and his pulse hummed. And then, finally, Tommy came in.

He looked awful, still bruised and battered, though at least cleaned up. He moved awkwardly, as if he was stiff and sore. Brett had hardly closed his eyes for worrying about him; it seemed Tommy hadnt slept either. Dark circles ringed his eyes, and the orange prison issue clothes made him look sallow and ill.

Tommy sat down. Brett fumbled for the phone, holding his breath until the other receiver rested against Tommys ear. He didnt know what to say, and ended up speaking without thinking, the words tumbling out in an angry rush.

“What the hell happened?” he demanded. Tommy winced. “What in the hell happened to waiting for the fucking lawyer? Huh?” Tommy smiled mirthlessly. “Hi.”

Brett had the grace to be embarrassed. “Hi. Im sorry.” He sighed. “Oh, Tommy. I know why you… did what you did in there. I just—”

“You had nothin to do with it. I couldnt let them treat you like you did.”

“But whats gonna happen? How are ya? Is everything… I mean,

can you—? Whats going on? Cause they wouldnt tell me anything. No one would tell me anythin at all and….” Brett stopped. He heard himself, the words just pouring out with no control. Not what Tommy needed right now.

“Im all right,” Tommy said. He reached up and tucked his hair behind his ear. “I got, uh, arraigned on second degree. They set bail pretty high, though, so Im here til the trial, I guess. Lawyer says so, anyway.”

“Collins?” Brett snorted. “I spoke to him. Mans an ass. Kept talking about how you oughta be preparing yourself for a guilty plea, hope for leniency?”

Tommy opened his mouth as if to say something, but Brett plowed on. Thethought that theyd been caught before Tommy had actually told him what happened that night passed across his mind only very briefly. He stomped on it, hard.

“No. You need to get a new defense. Woulda been better to have a new lawyer before the arraignment, but you can still do it. I got some numbers for you.”

Tommy frowned. “Wh—”

“His names Michael Ribideaux. Works out of Helena. Hes really good. He says you could have a shot at voluntary manslaughter… maybe even an acquittal with a sympathetic jury, if they could prove sustained, uh, abuse.”

Brett bit his lip. He knew Tommy wouldnt take kindly to that word; he never had.
