“I don't understand what I'm looking at.” I shuffle through the stack of papers on my desk, scanning over the words on the pages. Copies of invoices, newspaper articles, and various other random slips of paper that don’t seem to have any readily apparent meaning to me even after looking them over for several minutes.

Arden watches me anxiously from his chair on the other side of my desk. “That's everything I could find on Rose.”

“What?” I glance down at the very small stack again. “How is that even possible? The man has to be in his early forties. How can there be absolutely nothing on him?”

Michael’s cousin shrugs slightly and shifts forward in his chair to point at one of the pages on my desk. “You know Michael had me looking into him well before you ever asked.”

I nod slowly. Michael had told me that if anyone could find Rose, it would be Arden. He had faith in his cousin’s abilities...a faith I am certainly not sharing right now.

“Well, back when Michael was still in Albania, he knew Rose was becoming a player in Chicago and he wanted to know who his competitors were going to be if he succeeded in taking control here. I had a problem right from the beginning trying to locate anything substantial on Rose, and the more I tried to look into him, the more I suspected it was a lot bigger than just him being able to stay out of the spotlight.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, I think he has someone...someone with really fucking good hacking abilities who's been able to remove any trace of him. The only reason I was even able to find this,” he motions toward the papers, “is because of the shipment Valentina's men intercepted from him. I was able to trace that holding company back through several fronts, but I only made it past about seven layers before I hit another dead end.”

“Jesus. What about our Rose look-alike and Rowan?”

He sits back in his chair and shakes his head. “I spoke to her friend at the club like you asked, and I tried to track Rowan’s phone. She must not have it turned on. She hasn't responded to the text message Amber sent, and her phone location program I managed to hack into isn’t working because the phone isn’t turned on.”

“Shit!” She really doesn’t want to be found, which only makes me even more confident she knows something important.

“As for the mystery man…I've come up completely blank on him, too. I hacked into several neighborhood cameras around Kat’s Cradle and caught him a couple places but then lost him behind a line of bushes and was never able to pick up his trail again.”

“Goddammit.” I slam my fist onto the desk, and my knee bounces, thankfully hidden underneath the massive piece of wood so Arden can't see how agitated this entire situation is making me.

Especially after what happened with Rose last night, I need to know everything about him...starting with who the fuck he is.
