Chapter 17

The shelter was dead quiet after lights-out, giving Allie and Solei the perfect opportunity to look around Arlene’s room undetected. She followed behind Solei, checking one last time to ensure Jared wasn’t prowling the dark halls. However the General felt about bailing a sixteen-year-old out of juvie, Allie was glad to have help.

Solei had been released from the detention center just as quickly and painlessly as expected. The General seemed kind of annoyed by Allie’s request, but trying to decipher his professional, impersonal texts was even harder than trying to read Daniel’s face.

It was dark outside Arlene’s windows. Hours had passed, the sun had gone down, and Allie was still fuming that they’d lost her again. The hospital had just let a battered teenager waltz out, and the police hadn’t bothered keeping an eye on her as she reentered the world after her abduction, abuse, and almost fatal drugging seven days prior. As far as they were concerned, Arlene was just another delinquent runaway until forty-eight hours had passed, but Allie knew better. There wasn’t a doubt in her mind—that girl was in danger.

For once, Allie had been hoping a victim wouldn’t live or die by her decisions. Without Daniel and Phoenix available to help, there was no safety net to catch her if she fucked up.

Allie needed to find Arlene Conway before it was too late.

She let the door rest against its nail as Solei moved into the middle of Arlene’s bedroom, studying the plain furniture. It was just as unwilling to give up its secrets as it had been the night Allie crawled in through the window.

“Where have you looked for the datebook so far?”

“Literally everywhere,” she huffed, throwing out her arms, gesturing to every corner of the small room. “I’ve checked every drawer. I’ve checked underneath, inside, and on top of all the furniture. I even tore up the bed more than once to see if it was between the mattress and the box spring or something.”

The sight of the single pillow and clumsily made bed stoked the fire that had been sizzling inside Allie all day. Arlene should have been sleeping at Jared’s House, not wherever the hell she was. The sooner they found her datebook, the sooner Arlene could be back in bed. Safe, away from her shitty family, and alive.

Allie tipped her chin up. “What about the ceiling tiles? They look like they can be pushed up pretty easily.”

“Tried it already.” Solei looked up too, crinkling her nose at the drop-ceiling tiles. “Nothing up there but dust bunnies and spiderwebs. If you want to double-check, we’re going to have to clean before Arlene comes back. She’ll be mad if there’s dust all over everything—and trust me, she will notice. She likes things to be shiny.”

A squeeze of guilt pulled at Allie’s stomach. She still hadn’t told Solei that Arlene was missing again. It was dishonest to keep her in the dark, but Allie needed her cooperation, not her anxiety. It wouldn’t benefit anyone if she was too distracted to help her find this datebook and solve the case.
