At times, too, the dead demand of us

vengeance and that we should rejoice

in the death of their enemies

or in the triumphs of their lineage.

The groups shape themselves to the styles

of their members and whisper in the ears

of us, the living, that we should obey the prayers

of those who, though absent, require us

ever to bear in mind their rights

and, if we can, to fight their wars.

And thus the dead won’t feel so far away

and will resign themselves with their childish

petitions when they attempt to prove again

that we’ll never be able to bear their absence.
