At 10.40 Eva arrived at Seascape. She parked in a space outside the bistro and looked around. For people with far simpler lives, today was going to deliver as close to paradise as Southend could offer. The sky was deep blue, and the day was promising real heat in the afternoon. The paddlers, the kayaks and the swimmers were already out enjoying the water. Eva glanced their way, her mind full of nervous concern. She checked the bays of parked cars. An Audi, a Mini, a Beetle, an old Porsche and a navy blue Ford – they were all innocuous enough, and they were empty. She crossed the street and walked into Seascape, choosing a seat in the corner of the conservatory which faced out towards the pier and the town. It gave her an excellent view of the Southend side of the street. The Shoebury end was in her blinds pot, but she figured the cop, and the danger would come from town. With a glance past the wine menu, Eva ordered a tea, and then she waited. A blue BMW estate slowed as it approached Seascape. It paused near a space, and began to indicate backwards into it. The car reversed in. A man sat in the car and stayed there. Eva shifted and tried to peer at him through the glass, but he was caught in the shade behind his windscreen. What was he doing? Did she need to notify the DCI? She waited a little while longer, staring the whole time. Eventually, the car door opened. A tall man stood up and got out. He bent down to pick up a folder and looked along the street as he closed the car door and locked it shut. Eva stood up and moved to the window. The man had tight curly brown hair and a ruddy face. He looked at the glass and seemed to acknowledge her presence at the window as he started walking. When the man reached the traffic island in the middle of the street, Eva turned away to compose herself for the meeting. It was then she heard the screech of tyres, sudden and lurching. Then the cry and the thud. And then the second screech of rubber on the road. Eva leapt up and saw the tail lights of a dark car, possibly black surging away. The man with the ruddy face was nowhere to be seen. Before a second had passed Eva had turned towards the door and was running to the street. She scrambled out onto the pavement and lingered in shock on the steps. The tall man was lying flat in the road, a shoe missing. His folder lay in the opposite lane, and his folder was open. Someone nearby screamed in recognition that a man was down, then Eva started running towards him. Just as she reached him, she saw an empty space along the street. She looked at the cars while she bent down beside DCI Williams. There was a pool of blood gathering under his head.
