Chapter Seven

“How’s it going?” Ruth tossed a piece of sheet rock into a wheelbarrow. In order to speed up the prep work, anyone who could take the day off to help did. The Ladies Afternoon Social Club were in charge of the girls’ room.

Yanking at another section of wall, Eileen shook her head. “Not so well. I figured after all this time it would be easier.”

“Mistletoe didn’t work?” Dorothy asked.

“Depends how you look at it. According to Emmie, they kissed in the barn. But I haven’t been able to get them back to the barn since.”

Sally May tossed a charred wood scrap onto the pile. “What about in the house?”

“Sean almost lost his eyeballs when he saw all the mistletoe we’d strung in the barn. No way he’s letting me put even one sprig in the house.”

Pulling on another section of sheet rock, Ruth tripped backward. “Maybe we should just let nature take its course. After all, it’s worked fine for everyone else in the family.”

“It’s not nature’s course I’m worried about, it’s nature’s timetable.” As far as Eileen was concerned, the dog’s appearance cemented what she herself had thought for over a year.

Dorothy took a step back and hefted her gloved hands on her hips. “Maybe they don’t need tricks. What they need is time alone.”

Squinting in thought, Ruth studied Dorothy. “You know, she has a point. Think about it. When does a single mother of two ever get much time alone?”

“Ain’t that the truth,” Dorothy concurred.

Sally May nodded her head. “She is right.”

“Of course I’m right. So if Chloe never gets time to herself, how would Chloe and Reed get any time to themselves?”

As if a light bulb had gone off over everyone’s head, Eileen knew Ruth and Dorothy were both right on target. “So what we need is quiet time alone.”

“Or at least time away from watchful eyes,” Dorothy said.

Sally May muffled a laugh. “Like that’s going to happen in Tuckers Bluff.”

“Okay,” Eileen conceded. “Maybe not alone alone. Maybe all we need is just sort of alone.”

“Sort of alone?” women’s voices echoed.

Smiling, Eileen nodded her head. “Yep, and I know just where to start.”
