Types of Values
In my training, when I first did the values exercise (choosing less than 10 from a comprehensive list of redeeming qualities any sane person would covet), there were some values that stood out more clearly than others. At the time, I felt like I really connected with words like “safety,” “efficiency,” and “responsibility.” Then there were words/values that did not really connect with me, like “holistic living” (woo-woo), “privacy,” or “self-care.” I was feeling happy about my values and was feeling, “ Okay, this makes sense! I value efficiency…. I am not crazy…. This is a good thing.” Classic rationalization. I sat with this new knowledge, and something wasn’t sitting right.
Then I asked myself a magical question that changed my life: “If Lily (my daughter) were grown up, and she had to remember her mom, what would she say?”
And it struck me like a lightning bolt. I had ZERO desire for the person I cared for most in this world to remember me as “efficient” and “responsible.” I wanted her to remember me as adventurous, fun, dependable, honest, and authentic.
So right then and there I made a decision to live into how I wanted my daughter to remember me. I call this conscious choice an IVS: Intentional Value Shift.
It is the process, of letting go of old values and adopting new ones, that supports happiness and growth, not control. There are two types of values: conscience-based values and fear-based values.
Conscience-based values are values that rely only on me; they are things that solely depend on my behavior or desires.
Fear-based values are values that are based on disabling beliefs (efficiency = I must have control), or dependent upon external forces (recognition = someone has to honor me).
