Chapter Sixteen

Callie

“Finally,” I breathed, releasing a long exhale. Trent eased off the gas before turning his car into the driveway of a large, two-story brick home. We were in the Scott’s Addition area, where I knew the average cost of homes was at least four hundred thousand.

I glanced at him, expecting him to back out of the driveway and say that he was kidding, but he kept going until the garage door began to lift.

“Wow!” I said, straining my eyes to see more details. “You have a beautiful home.”

“Thank you,” he replied.

Although the stress of the night hadn’t entirely died down, it didn’t stop me from acknowledging Trent’s amazing house.

“I took you to my condo the last time because it was closer,” he said before I could ask who’s place we’d slept in the night he rescued me from Donni.

“Please don’t take this the wrong way, but I didn’t think dancers made enough to afford a place like this, let alone two places.”

He chuckled.

“The ones who use their money wisely do. I’m under thirty with a degree, a car, a condo, and a house that’s paid for. If you ask me, dancing is underrated as a good income source.” He lifted a finger to reiterate something. “Sorry, this house will be paid off by the end of the year,” he corrected. I could hear the pride in his tone, and he should have been. If he’d used dancing to get this big of a head start in life, then I applauded him.

A bit more of my tension eased when we rolled into his garage, and he cut the car’s engine.

He hopped out and marched around to my side to help me out. I slapped my palm into his, smiling up at the big, bright smile he shone down on me.

Warmth and ease were the relaxing vibes that rolled through my body while walking beside him. He keyed the door open before showing me in with a sweeping hand gesture.

“First things first. I’ll give you a little tour and make us some much-needed drinks.”

My smile spread wide. “Drinks sound great. And I can’t wait to see your home.”

At the first view of the living room, my eyes darted around the space before I shot a quick glance in his direction.

“You didn’t decorate…did you?”

“No,” he chuckled. “I did the smart thing and paid someone to do it for me. All I had to do was tell them what colors and styles I liked.”

I nodded, seeing the subtle hints of royal blue and splashes of yellow here and there as I passed through the den and entered the kitchen.

“So, is your favorite color blue or yellow?”

“Both,” he replied, grinning.

“His kitchen was all granite countertops and stainless steel. He even had a fancy rack with his pots hanging above the island.

“Nice. Do you cook?”

“No,” he replied quickly. “Doubt I know how to take one of those pots down.” He shrugged with a lighthearted grin on his handsome face.

I laughed.

“You laugh, but I’m one of those who’ll somehow manage to burn a pot of water.
