Chapter 15

When Chase entered his apartment, Marie was sleeping in front of the TV while Chris prepared supper in the kitchen. As Chase put the groceries away, he told Chris about his chats with Sharon and Mike at Starbucks.

“You’ve had a productive day!” Chris replied. “You got more evidence to discredit Bev and Patti, and landed a date, all while sipping premium-priced coffee. Very impressive for a guy who told me when we first met he didn’t know anyone in this town. What’s your date’s last name?”

“Ehrlich,” Chase replied. “Mike’s mother lives in this building, too. He runs a dry cleaning and floral business on Main Street.”

“Oh, yeah, I see Ehrlich delivery trucks here all the time,” Chris nodded. “I think his mother lives on the second floor.”

“He’s the first guy I was ever attracted to,” Chase confessed. “I used to sit several rows behind him during English class, just staring at him. I loved his long hair, sexy eyes, and cute face. I thought he had the most perfect body I’d ever seen, so he became my gold standard. I even developed a rating system to compare other guys to Mike. I started with 100, then deducted points for a crooked nose, ugly moles, excess body hair, skinny legs, love handles, and other flaws. Anyone with a score of 90 or higher I considered Ehrlich-like and date worthy.”

“Where would I fit on the scale?” Chris joked. “Am I Ehrlich-like and date worthy?”

Chase studied Chris for a few moments, realizing that he was very Ehrlich-like. The nose, eyes, and mouth were very similar, plus they had the same build. He decided to get a DNA sample from Mike and have it tested, too. “Yes, you’re date worthy. I’m sure Gerald will tell you the same thing!”

“You’re just being polite,” Chris complained. “So why didn’t you date him instead of that creepy John Sanborn?”

“Character flaw,” Chase sighed. “Billy told me I was too passive in seeking out people. I’ve always preferred to let people approach me first. I thought Mike was too good for me, so I settled for John when he approached me. By the way, John scored 95 on the Ehrlich-like scale when we met, so he was a close second.”

“How exactly did you and John hook up?” Chris asked.

“I heard my friends at the cinema talking about a gay cruising spot by the river,” Chase recalled. “It was a couple miles outside town. You had to park your car on a gravel road, then scramble down a hill and walk along the river until you met someone you liked. It was most active after dark, so I went out there after work one Saturday around midnight. I saw a couple dozen cars and was very excited. I strolled up and down the river for an hour, but none of the guys I saw appealed to me. When I got back to my car, I found John leaning against it, waiting for me. We did it right there, and we kept doing it several times a week until I left Stonebridge.
