TOUCHED BY THE GODS once, now, Vasudeva and Devaki allowed themselves to believe in miracles and it was not long after that Devaki found herself pregnant yet again. On a rainy night not long after Balarama’s birth, the eighth child of Devaki was born. The gods had protected Balarama, the parents thought, and so surely this newborn would also be protected.

Krishna did not cry when he emerged from his mother. Instead, smiling, the infant’s dark-skinned body bore four symbols upon his chest: a conch, a discus, a gada, and a lotus. And so the child’s parents knew, this was the boy of prophecy – the God of Love. Vasudeva would take the boy to the nearby village of Gokul, where he would be raised by Rohini alongside Balarama. Quickly, Devaki prayed to the gods again and they agreed to put the entire kingdom to sleep so that Krishna could be smuggled out.
