CHAPTER SIXTEEN

I closed the door for a little privacy as Rider answered before the first ring had finished. “Are you OK?”

I grinned. That was Rider. No hello, no casual inquiry into what I was up to, just an immediate need to know if I was all right. “I’m good. Christian told me he filled you in on what he thinks is happening here.”

“He did.” He went silent, and I could sense him wanting to ask me about the dreams, but something held him back.

“Did you sleep well today?” I asked.

“I’m fine,” he said, avoiding a direct answer, not that I really needed one. I could hear the tiredness in his voice. “You? I mean, after you spoke with Christian this morning?”

I sighed as I sat on my bed, leaning back against the headboard. “I know Christian told you about my dreams, and that he thinks this demonic entity is toying with me. I didn’t call for you because it didn’t seem like I was in immediate mortal danger. It was just … messing with me.”

“I know. One moment.” The line went so quiet I knew he’d muted the call on his end. “Sorry,” he said a moment later. “Just had to handle some business. What do you need, Danni? Do you need me to come help or do you want me to stay here?”

My mouth dropped open, and I just sat there stunned into silence.

“Danni?”

“I’m sorry. I thought I’d called Rider Knight. I don’t believe you and I have met, stranger.”

He let out a soft chuckle. “I’m trying, Danni. I can tell you it’s not easy. I really wanted to bring you back with me this morning. Hell, I never wanted to let you go in the first place.”

“So why didn’t you make me come back?” I asked. “I mean, I appreciate it, but I really expected you to declare this job far too dangerous for me and find a reason to lock me away.”

He went deathly silent for a long enough stretch I thought the call might have dropped.

“Rider?”

“Am I really that bad?” he finally asked, his voice low, and completely resigned. Not a hint of anger. He almost sounded defeated, which completely threw me for a loop. I was about to apologize for calling the wrong person again, and actually mean it. “I know I have a temper, and I need to be in control. It’s been my duty to protect for so long, and I’ve fought against a darkness you’ve only seen the tip of. I’ve grown used to calling the shots, making the decisions, and I honestly never cared if I pissed anyone off because at the end of the day, it was the result that mattered, not the means. I’ve survived so long because I’m a controlling, bossy, sonofabitch, and if being that way keeps you safe… I just want you to be safe, Danni.
