WE ALL NEED FRIENDS
In the previous chapter, we saw the importance of developing a close friendship with God and how He can strengthen and encourage us in times of loneliness. While our relationship with Him needs to be our top priority, He designed us to have relationships with people who understand us and share our interests. Our desire for close connection is part of who we are and how He knit us together. In Proverbs 27:9, Solomon wisely said, âA sweet friendship refreshes the soulâ (THE MESSAGE). His words could not be more true.
Lacking good friends can cause us to feel lonely. It can even cause us to feel envious of other women who seem to have more than their share of close friends. As we compare our lack of friends with their presumed abundance of them, our thoughts run wild. Why does she get friends and I donât? Why is God blessing her that way and not me? Humph. Arms crossed. Brow furrowed. Life is so unfair. I often had lots of these kinds of thoughts rolling through my brain all those years ago. Even while I was at the conference, I was jealous of women who walked together, laughing and appearing to know everything about each otherâs lives. I had a serious, joy-robbing case of friendlessnessâyet I was too embarrassed to tell anyone. But my heavenly Father knew, because He knows all the desires of my heart.
