I have no clear sense of how long things took.

Time was a top whirling inside my brain

Till I lost track of it. Now when I look

Back, what was days is stretched to months of pain

And what was only minutes seems like days,

For in my memory the anguish seems

To have gone on forever. In a haze

Of dread I stumbled, as men may in dreams

That last a moment live for anxious hours.

In the short, sharp space of a gasp or breath

What a long dream of sorrow may be ours!

Now I can understand how men at death

Can watch a crowded lifetime tumble through

Their brain in one brief shudder of review.
