Chapter Twelve

Morgan expected Tessa to be gone all morning since she’d stayed the night with her parents. He was surprised when she trotted into the office just before nine o’clock.

“Sorry I’m late,” she greeted him. “My mother insisted on feeding me before I left. And not something simple. How was the ride yesterday?”

He thought of Poppy’s joy and softened. “It’s not going to be easy to say no in the future.”

Tessa tilted her head. “That’s good, isn’t it?”

In a perfect world. One that made no additional demands on his time. “Any problems getting into the office yesterday?”

She didn’t blink at the sudden change of topic. “No. Security was expecting me. The keys worked. Went well.”

“Anything out of the ordi—”

“Tessa!” Poppy hollered, running into the room at top speed. “I got to ride Cornflake! And we had ice cream!”

“Wow! You scored, huh?”

“Uh-huh.” She bounded across the room to hang on Tessa’s arm. “Did you bring me anything?”

“Poppy!” Morgan chided.

“It’s okay.” Tessa reached into her jacket pocket, withdrawing a small turquoise hair bow. “My mother made this for you.” She glanced up at Morgan. “She likes crafts and I told her about how much Poppy enjoyed shopping for hair bows, but that we couldn’t find a turquoise one. Blue or green, yes, but not turquoise. My mother has ribbon in every color imaginable. Her craft room is huge.”

“She’s nice,” Poppy declared.

Tessa chuckled. “You’ll have to meet her.”

“When?”

“Well, when they come to visit,” Tessa replied.

“When’s that?”

Tessa met Morgan’s eyes and he shrugged a fraction to indicate the visit and its timing was up to her. Tessa didn’t immediately look away. Despite his resolve, something stirred within him.

“We’ll have to see,” Tessa replied.

“When Dorothy comes home?” Poppy asked innocently.

Tessa cleared her throat, her voice husky. “That sounds good.”

Morgan kept his gaze on Tessa, still wondering at the effect she had on him.

“Doesn’t it?” Tessa prodded gently.

What?

“It’ll be good when Dorothy’s well enough to come home,” she told him, helping him get back on track with the conversation.

Her effort was necessary, vital even. He cleared his throat. “Yes, it will.” He forced his thoughts away from the woman who stood in front of him. Refocusing, he thought of Dorothy, how he had hoped that she would recuperate at a faster pace. Knowing her, he guessed that she would improve more once she was at home. He hoped that time was coming sooner rather than later.

Glancing away from Tessa, he checked his watch and realized that he had time to stop at the hospital before his first meeting. If things worked out, he hoped to let Poppy visit in a day or so. He and Alvin had discussed the idea and both believed a visit would be good for Dorothy.

He was grateful for the progress Dorothy had made. Even if she never regained her complete mobility, the immediate fear of losing her was now greatly diminished. It had been such a relief, Morgan acknowledged, remembering his brief visit earlier.

Pleased to see the light in her eyes, Morgan had clasped Dorothy’s hand.
