The next day was the cat day. In the morning they drove to a part of the park which was savannah – a broad expanse of grassland with no trees and were lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a cheetah, who had been stalking an impala before they turned up and interrupted it. And under the trees bordering the savannah, they could just see the heads of several lions lazing in the shade. Liam told them that lions spent most of every day sleeping, so they’d been lucky to see them on the kill. It was very hot. Hotter than it had been any day before, and a hot wind was blowing the dust into their faces as they drove, so it was almost a relief that the only thing of interest being a pair of buffalo bulls under a tree in the distance, which didn’t delay their rush to the swimming pool very much. Even Margaret joined them all at the pool, the first time she had done so, and they felt comfortable enough to chat at length. Louise revealed a quirky and sometimes malicious sense of humor and she regaled them with stories about the staff and students at the school where she and Margaret taught, engendering some rather sharp noises of disapproval from Margaret. The students working on the newspaper used “the public’s need to know” as an excuse to gossip more than they normally would before a teacher, so she knew more about the students and the awkward situations they got themselves into than their parents and the other teachers did.. “Don’t worry,” she said to Margaret, “There’s no way any of this will get back to Ohio…unless you take it back.”

“I beg your pardon,” Margaret huffed, in high dudgeon.

They asked Joe about his life at home, and he told them about Sylvia, his almost fiancée, and about his mother’s volunteer work at a food bank, and about one or two of his sports successes. He searched his memory for funny things that had happened to him, but couldn’t think of any. His life in Colorado, he reflected seemed very tame in wild Africa.

After lunch, Liam announced, not looking at Joe, that he had to go back to the lodge for radio contact with the company, but said he would be back in time for the evening drive.
