One week. It had taken Henry one week to get under Darla’s skin like nobody had done before. It had taken one week for Darla’s world to be turned upside down once again in the span of a very short time.

And to think that the plan had been so simple: go home, help grandpa James out with anything he might need, try and ease his first week alone as much as possible, then go back to the city. The same city that she had spent the better part of her teenage years longing for and that now she dreaded to go back to.

It was ridiculous. It was surreal. It was doomed. Any story wherein the female lead falls in love with her best friend ends tragically—or, at best, not happily. Darla felt she was headed for disaster. And yet, she couldn’t help it. Austin was only a 45-minute drive away—an hour at most, if traffic was bad. Surely they could make it work? Surely it was worth it?

The idea had gotten stuck in her head ever since she realized she couldn’t quite picture her life without Henry in it. They had spent every single day—well, nights, mostly—together. Their connection was altered by their growing up, but it was still there, strong as ever. Stronger, in fact. Deeper. It was intellectual, it was emotional, and it was physical. Their brains spurred each other on, their hearts comforted each other, and if the mind-blowing quality of the sex was any indicator, their bodies were clearly meant to be fused together.

It was worth it. It had to be. Darla may not necessarily believe in a higher power, but she also didn’t believe that life would throw them back together just to separate them again a mere seven days later.

Back at her grandparents’ house, her bags were packed. She would leave for Austin the very next morning, but she had one more thing to do in Wimberley before she did. On her way over to the Barrett farm, in the quiet of her treasured red pickup, Darla went over the words in her head, trying to think of what she might say. How did one go about suggesting to their newly rediscovered childhood best friend to engage in a serious relationship? How did one go about asking for that kind of commitment after one week, regardless of how wild and incredible that week had been?

Darla had no idea. She never had to ask before, per se: things had always just happened. Now, however, time was limited and she found herself compelled to force fate’s hand.

Henry was waiting for her on the front porch when she arrived. With him there was a small child Darla had never seen before. The little girl wore a short-sleeved white flowered dress and had her long, auburn red hair gathered in pigtails. She swung on the porch’s swing, Henry sitting by her side, proudly showing him something that looked like a coloring book.

Darla frowned as she got out of the truck.
