Love of our planet
“W hat’s that?” the boy of about five asked. He was pointing to a butterfly in a photograph of a beautiful meadow of flowers. There were a series of photographs and the children were questioning their teacher with wonder about all kinds of fantasy creatures like deer and birds, and amazingly beautiful flowers.
The children kept asking why, as children do. “Why didn’t they take care of them for us?” “Why did they allow this to happen?”
I watched as the class finished and the children went off to play. One little girl ran around with her hand in the air, imagining she was running after a butterfly that perched there, while two other children played at picking flowers.
The angels were showing me a future where we had neglected and destroyed much of our planet. I was so full of shame and sadness watching this vision, knowing that I was being shown something that could come to pass unless we all stop taking our planet for granted and allowing ourselves and others to destroy it.
I feel very upset while writing this chapter. God has given the earth an angel that is its protector, its gatekeeper. God gave us this angel so our planet could flourish and give us a glimpse of heaven. But this angel, Jimazen, like any angel, cannot overstep the boundaries of human will. If we refuse to listen and see the signs he is giving us, he is powerless to stop us.
If we continue to treat the planet as we are, it will become barren and incapable of sustaining human life. Jimazen is giving us signs left, right, and center, but so many people are ignoring them, thinking that if it hasn’t affected them personally, they don’t need to worry about it. Natural disasters, changes in weather patterns, the western black rhino becoming extinct, may not have personally affected you yet, but have no doubt, if we don’t wake up very soon, in the future you and your family will feel the impact of these signs.
I remember as a ten-year-old paddling in the sea on the east coast of Ireland. I was playing on my own, as I often did when I was a child. I was enjoying the feeling of the water around my ankles when I felt the sand tremble under my feet and saw these large circular ripples like waves forming. I saw first the staff he always holds, and then Jimazen was there. Jimazen is an enormous angel, like a giant. He was dressed in gold and red protective armor with a tinge of black. He looked down at me with love, but as always when I see Jimazen I could feel his anger and frustration at how people were treating the planet.
On this particular day, some fifty years ago, he told me that we were destroying the sea with pollution. I didn’t understand the word, so he explained to me: “Man is putting loads and loads of dirt and bad things into the sea.
