Chapter Twenty-One

When I was younger, I loved going to the fair. It wasn’t something we did often since it was just the two of us and Mom didn’t have a lot of money- once a year at most, but I always relished the experience. Now, being here, seeing the happiness shining from Kassie's eyes as she swings from mine and Drew's hands, all the memories of long-forgotten days rush back and peace settles over me.

At my side, Ryan walks closely, his gaze seeming to sweep over everything and everyone, and I don’t understand what has him on such alert until I realize that not only are Drew and Lucien doing the same, but I am too. It’s strange, the fact that I’ve been on guard, making sure no one gets too close to the little girl at my side, says a lot to how fond of her I’d grown. That it feels natural to do so, speaks of a change I’d not even noticed coming over me.

“Any particular ride you’d like to go on, Ash?”

I turn my head from the crowd and look at Ryan, who is watching me but appears completely aware of what’s going on around him, too. Thinking about his question, I realize I don’t have any preference, only that I’m happy to be with them, and shrug.

“I don’t care. Whatever you all want to do. The only thing I want is to get a funnel cake before we leave. Kassie knows how to do the fair right,” I say, having to raise my voice to be heard over the numerous voices around us, the songs playing, and the sounds of rides whirling past.

They’re loud enough that Kassie doesn’t hear my mention of funnel cakes and remains blissfully unaware as she clutches her paper ticket. It’s only one, not even enough for a ride, but when Lucien handed it to her to hold, him pocketing the rest for safekeeping, her eyes lit up like he’d given her a crown.

As if she can feel me looking at her, she glances up and smiles, but quickly goes back to staring about. Drew, however, watches me intently enough that I feel heat rise to my cheeks, his eyes darting to my lips, followed by a flex of his jaw. His stare is penetrating, and it reminds me of how much I’d melted beneath his hands, his lips, during the night we shared. But he’s never mentioned it since, nor has he explained his abrupt departure following, so I turn from him and focus on where I walk.

“Well, in that case, since Ash doesn’t have a preference, it looks like Kassie is riding the teacups first. Who is riding with her?”

As soon as Lucien asks his question, he, Drew, and Ryan all blurt out “not it,” but Kassie doesn’t seem to care anyway as she turns big puppy dog eyes on me that tell me it wouldn’t matter if any of them wanted to ride with her or not. She’s made
