CHAPTER 4

Hannah sat in her car wondering what the hell just happened.

Because she felt like something had happened. What it was, she didn’t know. She pulled her mobile out and called Missy.

“Ready to come back so soon?” Missy teased.

“Hardly. But…I’m trying to sort something out and I think I need feedback.”

“What’s happened then?”

“I met with the carpenter today and we went over the interior layout. He wasn’t at all what I expected.”

“Ah, I see.” Missy’s tone was definitely still teasing. “Seriously hot, eh?”

“Well, yes, to be honest, if you like tall, muscular men with dark eyes and hair. But that’s not it. I had this urge to tell him…everything. I began sort of telling him all about myself without even realizing what I was doing. And he hadn’t asked, I just sort of started spilling out information. Is that normal?”

Missy gave a low whistle and said. “Hannah, I think you’ve been struck.”

Hannah was confused by the remark. “What do you mean?”

“You’ve been hit by Cupid’s arrow. That’s what happened when I met Liam! No one could understand it, either, including you. But after we had chatted for what, maybe ten minutes, I knew. He was the one for me.”

Hannah said nothing, but her ears started ringing a bit. “I’m sure that’s not it.”

“That’s it all right. You may as well give in to it and get to know him. The heart wants what it wants after all.”

“Well, thanks for that sage advice. I’ll talk to you soon!” She hung up before Missy could say anything more.

That simply could not be it. She’d been sure for years that all those fairy tales of people being smitten by instant attraction were just that: tall tales. It had never happened to her. Not even close. Her relationship with David was based on shared interests, not any sort of chemical chicanery.

Certainly Callum Hughes was handsome. She’d been very aware of him when they reviewed the interior layout. Maybe her arm had tingled a bit when it accidentally grazed his. But an attraction was simply that and nothing more. Even when paired with that odd feeling of homecoming she’d gotten from Caynham-on-Ledwyche, surely it wasn’t significant in any way. Was it?

All she’d ever wanted was to not be dependent on anyone but herself. To not pine for some grand romance like her poor mother always had. A lifetime of watching Moira weather inevitable heartbreak had convinced Hannah the best way to secure a relationship was to not pursue one at all. Her time with David had been an aberration in a life featuring only casual dates and hookups when desired. David had seemed…safe, she supposed. The right sort of man with the right sort of job at the right time.

Look how that had ended. She’d heard through the friend-group grapevine that he’d found someone new within a month of moving out. Thing was, she didn’t miss him after he’d gone. She’d expected to, but it never happened. By the time the opportunity came up to
