CHAPTER 19

HAPPY

I was back at Walthamstow Tube station. And it was midnight. My god, Mum’s going to be worried. I turned on my phone as Dorothy and I climbed the thousand stairs. The escalator was broken again. Five text messages came through. Okay, not so bad then.

Mum: Having fun?

Mum: How’s it going?

Mum: Let me know you’re okay?

Saddler Sam: I’m so glad we met, and I would love to see you again.

Mum: Annabel, please let me know when you’re coming home.

Oh my god, Saddler Sam wants to see me again! I imagined the people on the advertising posters applauding me, flares and fireworks burning in the sky and ACDC’s ‘Back in Black’ playing. I pictured all the passengers dancing with me, and a cabaret show starting.

Dorothy was pulling me through the station, most likely just praying for this night to end. It seemed this date night could not get any better for me. But oh yes, it could. Mum and the girls greeted me when I got home. They’d only had a few glasses of wine. Predictably, they interviewed me about my date. And they were loving all the juicy details: Harrods, the soldiers in the barracks, the leather.

‘Was he wearing his uniform?’ Glenda asked.

‘No, of course he wasn’t,’ I said, as I started to eat up her biryani. This cold, leftover, half-eaten takeaway was the best thing in my life at that moment.

‘Did you have a go on his horses?’ Marie asked.

I laughed and said no. ‘He’s a gentleman and I really hope to see him again,’ was all I said, and with that I took myself upstairs. Wig and lashes off, I fell asleep with a smile. …

Three weeks went by, and I was now officially dating this lovely man. Over the course of this time, he went from Saddler Sam, to Sam, to Sammy. I liked it. It suited him. And my name became Annie. Goodbye miserable Annabel, hello happy and confident Annie. ‘Annie Belasco.’ My name, with his last name.

It had such a ring to it, I thought, as I walked past jewellers on my way to work, picking out potential engagement rings that Sammy could get me. I stopped myself before I got too far in to the fantasy. I didn’t want to get this far and scare him off. I had to keep visualising the lobster in the cooking pot. And I had to keep reminding myself not to turn into that potential psychopath, which I knew could be around the corner at any minute.

But then again, it was like telling me not to buy eyelashes. I just couldn’t stop thinking about it. I knew that I had to have a gold ring. It had to be gold. My grandpa gave my dear granny a gold wedding ring. And they were my true romantic idols. The perfect idea of love – Granny and Grandpa, hand-in-hand, always by each other’s side. One without the other just never worked.

Sammy and I soon developed a routine. After work (every single evening), he would get the train to Finsbury Park and I would pick him up.
