Devi and the Roots of Feminism in India

एकैवाहं जगत्यत्र द्वितीया का ममापरा ।

—Durga Saptashati 8.5

I am the only one, who else is there apart from me.

Devi or the Divine Feminine is the oldest form of the divine, worshipped in ancient civilizations across the world. The ability to give birth was seen to be divine, and almost all ancient cultures worship mother figures. I am not sure as to how many tribal or aboriginal communities in the world continue to worship mother figures, but I do know for sure that in today’s India, devotion to the Devi or the Divine Feminine is as prevalent as devotion to popular male counterparts like Shiva and Vishnu, if not more. How well this has been studied and documented—that feminism in India is rooted in the worship of the Devi—is anybody’s

guess, though.
