Every time Shane closed his eyes that night all he could see was Anthony’s face masked in shock. The look should have brought Shane joy but it didn’t, it caused him physical pain instead. Rolling over in hopes of finding a comfortable position, Shane punched his pillow with more force than necessary. Shane was angry at Antony for lying, at the world for taking his parents, and at himself for feeling so weak and lost. He thought he was stronger, and could withstand anything. He was wrong. Was wanting someone in his life so wrong, and why was it so hard to admit? When Ian had asked if he wanted a relationship, he caught himself launching into his much practiced line of, “I don’t have time for a relationship.”

That was the farthest thing from the truth. He did have time. It was fear that stopped Shane from having one, and he knew it. The lies he told others he didn’t tell himself. Plain and simple, he didn’t want to get hurt.

Kicking the mattress, he spun again and threw off the sheets. Fuck. Unable to sleep, Shane dragged himself out of bed and to the only window in the bedroom. He cranked the old fashioned window to let in the unusually cool night air. He inhaled the scent of night blooming jasmine and salty surf, hoping to clear his swirling thoughts. Shane was tired of always trying to figure out Life’s next move. It was much easier when his parents were alive. They were his and Ian’s safety net. Now they had no parents, and no one who cared for them. Shane felt alone and lonely and he didn’t know how to stop feeling that way.
