Chapter 34

Tanner was carrying a fairly large stump. He dropped it, reached down and, with the board he'd managed to shove under the door frame, used it as leverage and yanked upward.

"Shove that log in," he grunted, holding the door about eight inches off the ground.

Dayna grabbed it and pushed it under. But it didn't fit. "Lift higher."

"Easy for you to say," Tanner mumbled, as he heaved the door higher.

Dayna crouched down. Using her legs, body, and arms, she shoved. And then launched her weight behind the log. It was tight, but the log finally slid another couple of inches. "It's under."

Tanner stepped back, stumbling over the other piece of wood he'd left there. He backpedaled but couldn't stop his momentum. He went down. Dayna reached for him but found her hands flailing empty in midair.

"Are you all right?"

From his semi-reclined position on the ground, he looked up at her with disdain. "Yeah. Just a slightly bruised tush. And ego. But we got it."

He got to his feet. The door was sitting about a foot off the ground. Dayna stared at the small space when a sound in the distance caught her attention. She spun around, her gaze tracking over the area. Nothing. She took a slow breath. "Now what?"

Tanner shook his head but didn't look at her. His gaze was arrested by the small space under the door. He seemed to be evaluating it. When he raised his eyes to look at her, it only took a second for her to realize what he was thinking.

She flipped up her hands. "No. I won't fit. I'd have to wiggle and squirm to get under that. We need a bigger piece of wood."

He gave her a derisive look before getting down on his belly. He took out his phone and shone the flashlight inside the garage. Curious, and thinking she could at least do that, Dayna laid down beside him and did the same. It wasn't easy to see inside, so she eased her head under the door. There was a car along the far side. It looked like there was a large gash and dents along the driver's side.

"A hit and run?"

"It looks like someone is hiding it for a reason." Tanner flipped onto his back and tried to shove the door upward. It moved a few inches. Not far enough that he could get under, but she could. She tucked her phone in her pocket.

"All right. I'll go in but you make sure you can get me out." Lying as flat as she could, she wiggled her way under the door. When it hit her butt, which had been her concern, she wiggled and squirmed to pull herself free. Tanner shoved, moving the door another inch upward. She pulled herself through and stood up, brushing off her clothes, unsure if there was dirt or not, but she felt dirty. She pulled out her cell phone and turned on the flashlight. The side of the garage she was in was empty.
