CHAPTER 16

The first thing Misty did the next morning was call the school to ask the secretary about the old records. After doing so, she was placed on hold and waited for over ten minutes until the secretary, Mrs. Benning, finally came back to the phone.

“I’m sorry, but unless you have proof that you’re a relative, you can’t view any of Elena Himmel’s records,” she said.

“So…you still have the records?” Misty asked, her eyebrows raising in both surprise and anticipation.

“Yes, of course we do,” Mrs. Benning stated impatiently. “Is there anything else I can help you with?”

“No, thank you,” Misty replied, and hung up.

Sitting at the kitchen table with a half-eaten omelet on her plate, Misty’s mind whirled with thoughts on how she could figure out a way to see those records. Principal Kirby apparently didn’t want her looking at them, and instead of simply telling her “no”, he’d lied and said they no longer existed. Why? No one was around when she entered the front office, and she could hear amplified voices coming from the gym.

“Hello?” she called out, hoping that Mr. Kirby was in his office, but no one responded.

With a frustrated sigh, Misty decided it would be best to come back another day, but just as she turned to go, she spotted a room in the far back corner with “Storage” written above the door. Her eyes widening, she slowly looked around, wondering if she dared go in there. What if someone saw her? Or what if she got in without a problem, but couldn’t get out without being seen?

Throwing all caution to the wind and grabbing the chance that presented itself, Misty hurried around the front desk and tried the door handle, her heart picking up speed when it turned easily in her hand. With no hesitation, she quietly slipped inside the dark room and pushed the door back without fully closing it; she wanted to make certain she didn’t get locked inside.

The storage room was quite large, with shelves upon shelves of boxes, filing cabinets, and old computers filling most of the space. Not wishing to turn on the
