CHAPTER THIRTEEN

The Real Rex Rangler

We slid off the Dino Barn loading dock but the door opened all the way before we could run. Hunkering below the lip of the dock I held my breath and waited. Vicki even stopped chewing her bubble gum.

I still couldn’t believe Rangler was behind all the ghostnapping. Maybe it wasn’t him. Maybe his lackeys wanted to impress him by capturing real ghosts. He was a big TV star, and everyone loves TV stars.

“What’s that doing there?” Rangler slapped at a guard on his right, all muscles and hairy arms. He was the same one who’d gotten me in trouble the day before. “What idiot left that sitting outside in the open?”

Hey! He was talking about my dad!

“Some numbskull leaves our top-secret project on the porch? Morons! I work with morons!”

The guard nodded blankly while he scanned the dock, looking out from behind his sunglasses. “I’ll check into it.”

“Be sure you do,” Rangler said with a sneer. “Or you’ll be looking for work. I don’t tolerate screwups. No one else in the world will have real ghosts in their amusement park. Can you imagine the crowds, and all that money? We can’t risk anyone finding a stray containment unit lying around, giving away our secrets.”

“Did you hear that?” Vicki poked me and whispered in my ear. “He said ‘real ghosts.’ He is behind it.”

I swallowed the lump in my throat. Vicki was right. Rex Rangler was a ghostnapper.

“I thought I heard someone.” One of the guards took three steps toward us and peered down. I scrunched under the overhang as far as I could. Vicki held her breath. He seemed to stare right over us, and Vicki started to shake, her lips quivering.

The guard took a sniff. “Smells like gum.”

Vicki’s eyes bugged out and with a giant swallow she choked down her bubble gum.

“Never mind that,” Rangler said. “Get this crate inside.”

The guard turned away and walked back to the door by Rangler.

Vicki let out a breath and rubbed her throat. “That was close. Let’s listen and maybe he’ll tell us how to get the ghosts out.”

“That only happens in the movies,” I said. “Real bad guys aren’t dumb enough to tell you how to defeat them.”

“Get this thing inside,” Rangler said. “And be careful not to touch it. Once we empty it into the ectoplasmic projector we’ll be able to bring the ghosts out for display anytime we want.” He rubbed his hands together with glee. “When the permanent containment unit is operating they won’t be able to escape. I’m glad we tested it at the old museum. It’s a work of genius, if I do say so myself.”

He wiggled his eyebrows, which were almost as big as his mustache. They looked like wings and he was ready for takeoff.

Vicki grinned.

“Well, sometimes movies are like real life,” I said.

“Dude!”

Vicki and I both spun around at the sound of a bike skidding to a stop behind us.

“Trey, man. I’ve been looking for you. Want your drink?” Hardy hefted a turbo-bladder-blaster over his head.
