Chapter Twenty-Five

Friday, 5:30 p.m.

Span is driving when he hears the news. It’s a WWTC all-news radio “exclusive report” from an authoritative baritone named Skip something:

“The reclusive Minneapolis billionaire Jonas Kron has upped the ante. Named by police as a ‘person of interest' in the spectacular June 5th church murders, Kron today doubled the reward he’s offering for information leading to the capture of the suspects to ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS.” (Then came Kron’s voice.) “I won’t rest until these criminals are arrested and convicted of this brutal crime.” (Skip’s baritone resumed.) “Kron emphasized that he’s PERSONALLY putting up the reward. His offer comes on the same day that the Star Journal linked KRON, HIMSELF, to the crime, reporting that a money-filled envelope with Kron’s corporate logo had been discovered in the luggage of the two murder suspects. The suspects remain at large.

“ In other news …”

Span pulls onto a side street and parks. He picks up his phone. “Stephanie? It’s me.”

“Hello, Spaniel. Long time no talk.”

“You hear about Kron doubling the reward?”

“Part of his new public relations campaign, thanks to you.”

“What do you mean, thanks to me?”

“You spooked him, Spaniel. Your story this morning about the cops finding his name in the killers’ luggage and the cops now calling him a ‘person of interest.’ Scared the shit outta him. He calls Olyphant, all shook up. I shouldn’t be telling you this.”

“Please don’t stop. I’m panting.” (Span knew Stephanie was referring to Clarence T. Olyphant, senior partner in her law firm and a sage in corporate circles.)

“Ollie tells him the secret word: public relations. Start putting his name out before the public in a positive way. Feed hungry kids. Build a new wing at the hospital. Make contributions to charity. You get the picture.”

“You’re kidding. Kron? Polishing his image? When did this call happen?”

“This morning, first thing. Get this. Ollie tells him to call Lionel Redding.”

Span knows Lionel Redding as principal owner of the Minnesota Twins Baseball Club. “Why Redding? His PR problems are worse than Kron’s.”

“Maybe. But, Kron calls Lionel and, shazam! Kron is actually making a short speech at the game, and, listen to this, throwing out the first pitch!”

“When?”

“Tonight!”

“No way! Instant gratification for rich guys? I gotta see this.”

Span’s next call is to Maggie.
