Chapter 12

Hades

“Oh, fancy.” Autumn beamed as her fingers traced the black metal of my chariot. She continued along the gold leafed patterns, spotted with the odd jewel. “You really go all out for a girl, don’t you?”

Her flirting set me on edge. Left me confused. A year ago, she made it clear she never wanted to see me again. I’d respected her wishes even though it went against every instinct inside of me. Now, all I wanted to do was claim her again, press her into the side of the chariot, never let her go. But the last time we kissed, she’d made it abundantly clear how she felt about that, too.

But Locke had said Autumn still love me. To win her heart back I had to open up to her. To do that, Locke recommended I start small, so I did. I took Autumn for a tour of the underworld. I hoped it might break down some barriers between us, help us work together more cohesively. I didn’t need to be distracted by holding back from her or my intense feelings for her.

Autumn winced as she lifted her leg onto the step of cart and all that left my mind. I squeezed her hand, climbing up first to lift her onto the carriage.

“Here, let me help you.” I circled her waist, and she whimpered as I raised her onto the chariot. That spark burned through me, and I felt lightheaded from the heat after spending so long in a state of winter. I shook my head to be free of it.

One snap of my fingers and I converted the chariot from a standing transportation device to a carriage where she could sit and rest her injured leg on a cushioned seat and rest her back.

She gasped and jumped as it shifted. “Oh.”

The dark horses whinnied at the front of the carriage, more from her startled response than anything. These were the sturdiest horses in Olympus. They didn’t spook at explosions of fire in Tartarus or the bark of Cerberus as he chased down fleeing souls.

She smiled as I set her into the seat. “Perfect.”

I sat beside her and smiled. “Are you comfortable?”

“Always so accommodating,” she murmured with a distant smile.

Of course, I wanted to make her comfortable. Autumn, as the Lady of the realm, deserved all the luxury entitled a goddess. With her leg injured, I wanted her rested, healed and safe. Then we could continue to seal the remaining rifts in the lining of the afterlife.

“I grew up with nothing,” I told her, studying her. Her green eyes lightened. “Now, you’re here, and I have everything I ever wanted in abundance.”

She smiled.

My heart jolted. More. Tell her more. I froze out of fear of opening up and the consequences. God, after all this time, my mother still haunted me. I was the Lord of the Dead for god’s sake. In the Underworld, I was in charge, and I could say as much or as little as I liked.

But saying nothing wouldn’t help my cause with Autumn.
