"Well, you know what she is, then. A real bucket of ice. The gal in the mud wagon was younger and prettier, but just as snooty. Sometimes I don't think they know who won the war back in '48."

Longarm lost interest in the senorita, since a grand idea had just been stepped on again. "I don't suppose you tallied before you bedded down the cows," he said.

"Wrong, Professor Goodnight," McBride answered. "I tallied myself, and surprise, they're all still with us. Now, if you'll be good enough to tell me what that means, I'll turn in and get some shut-eye."

Longarm shrugged. "It just means nobody run up behind you and stole a cow. Since I was watching for them to do it, it's not as big a surprise as all that. Fd say that if they ain't ghosting us, they're circling wide and laying in wait."

"Maybe. They wasn't waiting for us here."

"I know. How far up the trail did you say that next town is?"

"Oh, eight or ten miles. We'll pass through her tomorrow. Why?"

Longarm said, "I'm riding on ahead, if it's all right with you."

McBride frowned. "I'll let you, but I wish you'd tell me why."

"It's early," Longarm said. "The cantinas will be open. Who knows who a man might see in a trail-town cantina if he moseys in alone and a herd's not due in for a while?"

"Makes sense," McBride replied. "I reckon I can spare you on the morning drive. You better take along a couple of the boys. It's a mean little Mex town and you'll want somebody keeping an eye on your back."

Longarm declined the offer. "I'd feel safer alone. The trouble with having a sidekick watching your back is that you have to watch his back, neither one of you sees a damn thing."
