A Cheerful Sunday in Potenza

When the sun shines and the call of the road becomes impossible to resist, a tour of the Potentino’s less frequented parts will help sate your wanderlust – not that the district’s other areas are exactly teeming with travellers. From Potenza take the Raccordo Autostradale 5 (RA5) towards Salerno and exit at Tito. Continue on to the cloister of the 16th-century 1Convento di Sant’Antonio (%348 969 64 00; Largo del Convento; hby reservation), which boasts a lively cycle of frescoes (1606) by Pietrafesa illustrating the life of St. Antonio. From there follow the SS95 and take a small well-signposted detour off to the left. This will lead you to the 2Torre di Satriano (%329 458 87 95, 340 269 79 57, 389 962 42 61; www.torresatriano.it; Località Torre di Satriano; adult/reduced €3/2; hby appointment 10am-11.30am, 11.30am-1pm & 5-7pm), whose upland setting comes as close as anything in Basilicata to the Scottish highlands. The history of the medieval-but-repeatedly-demolished-and-rebuilt tower, is told in the small museum inside. Now that you’ve felt like the Lucanian king of the castle, you might be starting to feel a bit peckish. So, push on southwards on the SS95 and SS598 to 3Marsico Nuovo. Home to the HQ of the Parco Nazionale Appennino Lucano Val d’Agri-Lagonegrese, there are several agriturismi that make an ideal lunch stop. If you go to Agriturismo Vignola (%0975 34 25 11; www.agriturismovignola.it; Contrada Capo d’Acqua 23; meals €30) you’ll realize that the term ‘Vignola’ (meaning little vineyard) doesn’t quite work, given the huge size of the portions. To digest your meal, you can drown in rivers of Amaro Lucano or drive an hour up to 4Anzi (via the Abriola–Anzi road) and its futuristic observatory (%340 469 49 09; www.planetarioanzi.wixsite.it; Via Salita Rosario; planetarium visits €5, planetarium & observatory €10; hby reservation), positioned on Monte Siri. Next to the observatory, the Chiesa di Santa Maria houses 16-century frescoes by Giovanni Todisco. After such a varied day, return to 5Potenza with your heart brimming with beauty.
