Meanwhile at his new hideout, Francis Cammaerts received a signal telling him to: GO TO PARIS NOVEMBER 12 STOP MEET BISTRO PLACE CLICHY SUNDAY MORNING MAN WITH FIGARO NEWSPAPER.

At the rendezvous the ‘man with Figaro newspaper’ told him that he was to go by train to Angers where he would be met and taken to an airstrip. A Lysander would take him from there to London. The pick-up went like clockwork and was organised by Henri Déricourt. Cammaerts noted that the security was perfect.

In London, Henri Frager had just returned from France determined to prove that Déricourt was a dangerous double agent and that Gilbert Norman had been turned and was now a traitor. He was interrogated at great length about his conversation with Colonel Henri (Hugo Bleicher). He repeated everything he had said to Bodington in August. He confirmed that Bleicher had told him the Gestapo were running a radio pretending to be Gilbert Norman so tricking London into thinking the agent was alive and well. He repeated his assertion that the Germans had other SOE radios and were using them to feed false information to London. He went on insisting that Déricourt was a double agent. At the end of his report the interrogating officer wrote that he was satisfied that Frager was ‘. . . attempting to the best of his ability to tell the truth and that he is genuine’. The interrogation report was read by MI5, Maurice Buckmaster and Nicolas Bodington.

Nancy Wake was looking for ways to get back into the war. She had rented a flat in St James’s and redecorated it, hoping to be reunited, as planned, with her husband, Henri. In anticipation of his arrival she bought him pyjamas, slippers and a dressing gown plus a bottle of brandy and a bottle of wine but he remained in France. She saw a lot of Ian Garrow, now returned and recovered from his ordeal. Nancy had a nightmare that Henri was dead.

She decided to see if the Free French would use her as an agent and got an interview with Colonel Passy, the code name for one of de Gaulle’s most senior intelligence officers. At the interview she was flattered to discover that the French knew who she was and admired the work she had been doing in the Resistance. Even so, Passy told her it was unlikely that he would be able to offer her a role.

Depressed and confused she went back to her flat. The next day she received a telephone call from an officer in British Intelligence demanding to know what she had been doing at General de Gaulle’s headquarters. She replied she did not know what he was talking about, she hadn’t been anywhere near the French. The officer persisted, telling her when she had arrived, when she left, what she was wearing and where she had gone afterwards.

Nancy realised that the British were spying on the French because they did not trust de Gaulle.
