Terry and Julie Marsh - looking very much the part in their Barbour jackets and wellington boots - were having a delightful stroll through the Kent countryside. They did this all the time these days, now that they had to work less and their youngest had finally left for university. A crisp but golden autumn morning was warming with the rising of the sun, and all was right with the world.

‘Here boy,’ said Terry as Buster, their French Bulldog, came bounding back to them with his little tennis ball sloppy from the dew and his own slobber.

Terry tore the ball from the dog’s powerful jaws and launched it back into the woods; Buster bolted after it.

‘I love these walks,’ said Julie, ‘it’s so peaceful and calm. England’s so beautiful on a day like this. Let’s head a little deeper into the woods.’

They turned right, past a swathe of stinging nettles and on towards the heart of the woods. The temperature dropped a little, the canopy of the enveloping trees shielding the area from the sun. The couple held hands as Terry gave a loud whistle to alert their canine friend to the change of direction. Buster came bouncing from out of the undergrowth with the all the unbridled energy and love of life of a three-year-old dog, and presented the ball to Julie.

She bent down, stroked his head and teased the ball gently from his grip. She threw it in a new direction and Buster once again flew after it in chase, tail wagging, tongue flapping, as Terry checked the map, held it up to Julie and discussed their next move.

Buster returned eager to continue his fun, circled them and leapt up like a gazelle, insisting they pay attention to his needs. They tried to ignore him but he was not an easy dog to give the cold shoulder to, and he won the battle of wills. Terry bent down, took the ball from Buster and launched it with all his might. They savoured the silence while the dog gave chase.

A few minutes later Buster came tearing back into view. The tennis ball was nowhere to be seen but he was jumping up and barking, even more animated and excited than usual. He sprinted back in the direction he’d come from, then back to Terry and Julie. The process repeated itself. Again. And again.

Julie said, ‘I think he wants us to follow him.’

Buster led them down into a ravine and then bolted up the other side of it, still doing multiple to-and-fro sprints. They climbed the other side of the ravine to see Buster in a small clearing, manically scratching and digging as if his life depended on it. Terry reached the spot of Buster’s frenzy.

‘What’s the matter boy? What is it?’

The digging continued. The dog’s energy was frenetic, wild, ceaseless. Finally the source of Buster’s excitement was revealed - and it made the hairs on the back of Terry’s neck stand to attention and his stomach heave. He reeled back in horror, winded by surprise and gasping for breath.
