Cynthia

The sweat made the top of my skull tingle, dripping down my ear to the back of my neck. Tulips were in season, and I'd gone out to pick some wild ones for the house. Imagining Davin's face when he saw them had me smiling from ear to ear. I couldn't wait to see him.

I quietly snuck into the house on the balls of my feet to the back of the house. He would be there. As the room came into view, it was revealed that Davin and Jessica were sitting there straddling each other, kissing.

The wet tingle on the back of my neck got itchy. I wanted to wipe it away, but I couldn't. All I could do was watch Jessica swirl her tongue in and out of Davin's mouth. All my worst nightmares were coming true. The sweat dripped down my back, pooling into a puddle. I looked down, and there was a dark, black hole.

My alarm rang.

I pushed the blanket off me and sat up straight. My bedsheets were soaked underneath me. I turned off the alarm reading eight a.m. The sun was peeking through the curtains, shining brightly. It had been a series of scorching weather lately. That was how it got in desert counties at the end of August. Thank God it was Sunday because I couldn't wait to see my family. A two-hour self-healing road trip was exactly what I needed.

My duffel bag had been packed from the night before, and it sat in front of my bedroom door waiting for me. Inside was cleaned, folded clothes. My plan was to call in sick on Monday because I wasn’t feeling up to talking to Davin. He would be fine with it…I could email Tabitha on my way out and let her know I wouldn’t make it in. I could make up something about coming down with a fever.

My stomach was turning as I got out of bed and got ready. Thinking about what happened last night made my head hurt. Davin wasn't like any guy I'd been involved with before. On the one hand, he was a billionaire. On the other, he was paying my salary. Not only that, but he was also tall, good-looking, had a nice car, and was so far out of my league I was asking for heartbreak. Being with him was just asking for trouble. A guy like that didn't belong to any one woman.

It was not my place to know Davin’s history with his ex. Nor was it my place to question said ex’s motives. But sue me if I didn’t feel insecure about it.

I scurried around the room, making sure I didn’t forget anything. I brought my shoes upstairs last night, so I could be ready to leave. I’d just have to sneak across the hall, down the stairs, and rush out the front door. Technically, all my Sundays were off, so it wasn’t like I was committing a crime or something. But my heart was beating fast, and my palms were morbidly sweaty as I snuck down the stairs like a thief in the night.
