Coriander

Botanical name: Coriandrum sativum

Also known as: Chinese parsley, cilantro, coriander seed, Italian parsley

This plant is known by two names: coriander and cilantro. Technically, coriander refers to the seeds and cilantro to the lower leaves. With erect, slender stems, this strongly aromatic herb grows about two feet tall. The golden brown ball-shaped seeds are less than ¼ inch in diameter. The genus and common names for the plant come from the Greek koriandron, which was derived from the word koris, meaning “bug,” referring to the smell of the leaves and unripe seeds.38

With their use dating to the Sumerian and Babylonian civilizations, coriander seeds are one of the oldest and most highly prized food flavorings. They were used in Egypt and around the Mediterranean as early as 1500 BCE.39 The Greeks and Romans used the seeds for medicinal and culinary purposes, as well as a flavoring for wine. Coriander was also used as an aphrodisiac. The Romans introduced the plant into Western Europe and Britain. Today, coriander is widely used as a flavoring in a range of foods and beverages, including several liqueurs.

Oil Description and Precautions

Steam-distilling the seeds produces a colorless to pale yellow oil with a medium viscosity. Coriander has an approximate shelf life of two to three years. Do not use this essential oil during pregnancy; use in moderation.

Blending for Scent

Coriander essential oil has a sweet, spicy, and slightly woody scent. Some oils that blend well with it include cardamom, cinnamon leaf, cypress, ginger, grapefruit, lemon, lemongrass, neroli, orange, petitgrain, pine, sandalwood, and ylang-ylang.
