Ostara Ritual

Melissa Tipton

One of the most important ingredients of successful magick is a unified will, meaning that, as much as is humanly possible, all parts of you are fully on board with experiencing the desired outcome of your magick. I find it helpful to visualize the unified will as an arrow. Through breathwork, meditation, ritual, and other practices, I gather my energies into this arrow, and then I aim it using a clear intention. When our energies are scattered, the “oomph” of our arrow is lessened, making it more difficult to effect powerful changes with our magick. One of the primary reasons for scattered energy is a disconnect between our conscious and unconscious selves.

Ostara, celebrated at the Spring Equinox, is a time when day and night, potent symbols of the conscious and the unconscious, exist in equal measure, making it easier to find this balance within to create a powerful, unified will. Ostara is also a time for beginnings and fresh starts, so once we have forged this unified will, we can direct it with intention into new creations.

Unifying the Will

For the following ritual, you will need two black candles, three white candles, and a small fireproof vessel. Optionally, one of the white candles and the fireproof vessel can be replaced by a campfire if you are performing the ritual outdoors. You will also need an intention of your choosing, written on a slip of paper. Ideally, phrase your intention in the present tense and be specific. For example, instead of “I want to be happier at work,” try “My work fulfills me on all levels: emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and financially.”

Four of the candles will be used to mark the directional quarters, and you are welcome to call in any deities or guides of your choosing for each. We are using white and black candles to emphasize the contrast between night and day, and you will be performing your ritual in the balance between these polarities. For this reason, I like to situate the elements so that fire and water are opposite each other; ditto with earth and air.

I love to perform this ritual at daybreak on Ostara, in honor of Ēostre, goddess of the dawn, but feel free to choose a time and location (indoors or out) that works best for you. You might choose a time when you don’t often do ritual (another reason I like working at dawn) to help you slip more easily into a liminal, out-of-the-ordinary mindset.

Arrange the four candles so one is marking each of the four directions (north, south, east, and west) with a white candle opposite a black one, making sure that the candles are situated safely so they won’t topple over. If outdoors, you can ready the makings of a campfire in the center, but otherwise use this spot for the third white candle and a fireproof vessel for burning your intention.

Cleanse the space with the method of your choice, such as sage smoke, a ringing bell, or clear intention, and, standing inside the candles, prepare to cast a sacred circle.
