Chapter Nine

“I never suspected a stranger would be outside.” Lizzy remarked.

She and Mr. Darcy were alone in the office but Lizzy kept her distance between them. She offered a prayer to Our Blessed Mother to aid her as she remembered their last time they were alone. Thankful she prayed a Hail Mary, Lizzy was by the window and she had her hands on her hips.

“Yes; I noticed someone was out there earlier.” Mr. Darcy answered. Lizzy nodded but she kept her focus outside; she knew that the other servants for the families were in the back but by the barn or foundation?

“You saw him by that tree, correct?” Lizzy inquired and when she looked, Mr. Darcy nodded. He too was by the window but he held his arms in. Lizzy noticed this but she made no remark. Instead, she looked over to the tree and saw the outline of the back. There were a few trees, while to the left, the Darcy’s barn. Over to the center was the field where they would let their horses run.

To the right, the foundation and a small garden. Lizzy liked this because it was a very peaceful place and the noise of the creek was one of her favorites. The Darcy’s’ were blessed to have a place as this and what a blessing for others to join too!

“Wait, Miss Bennet; over there. Did you see that?” Mr. Darcy interrupted. Lizzy looked and then she narrowed her eyes. The evening light was out but it was bright enough for her to see who was about. As she watched, there was a horse who appeared from the barn. Both of them paused when they watched this; even Mr. Darcy frowned too and Lizzy offered a prayer here. She prayed they would know who the induvial was and how the horse was walking on his own from the barn. Or rather by a trainer?

“Is he one of your horses?” Lizzy inquired softly; she leaned over towards him but Mr. Darcy, his arms folded, only stared harder. Lizzy guessed he was trying to figure out if that horse was theirs or not. After she finished her prayer, Lizzy took a step from the window before Mr. Darcy responded.

“No; he’s not. And I know he’s not Burt’s.”

Lizzy kept her voice low as she watched too. The horse, as he appeared, was on his own but Lizzy noticed he didn’t a saddle on him. She was thankful they were covered by the window; yet Lizzy kept her focus around the area. She knew the grounds of the manor was large and the Darcy’s owned 3 acres. Lizzy hadn’t walked all the grounds but she knew that if there were prowlers – they either knew their way around or didn’t.

“Miss Bennet? Did you notice that over there?” Mr. Darcy interrupted. Lizzy looked and when she watched, there was another figure who appeared from the left. Her heart pounded when she watched as he approached the horse; the horse turned and stopped where he was as the stranger got closer.
