Be Good to Yourself
Even though time to ourselves is often hard to find, especially when young children are in the home or a job keeps us stretched for time, it is critical for our well-being and our healing. Maybe itâs been a while since you focused on yourself. If so, now is the time to start.
Take control of your life, and start living it instead of just surviving it.
Think of things that bring you delight and happiness; then make a commitment to yourself to do at least one of those things consistently. Maybe you love long walks in the park, bubble baths with a glass of wine and a magazine, yoga, hiking, horseback riding, or driving through the countryside with the windows rolled down. Perhaps you need to hire a babysitter for just a few hoursâor call on a loved one to helpâto give you a couple of hours of âme time.â Maybe there is a hobby you used to enjoy before children or marriage; why not pick that hobby up again? Maybe your heart would lighten if you began seeing a counselor each week and talking about your feelings in a safe place. Choose things that will promote your well-being, and donât let any destructive habits creep in.
Think about what would make you feel better about yourself. Maybe itâs a makeover, a trendy new haircut, or starting a diet and exercise program. Go shopping and update your wardrobe. If money is tight, visit your local Goodwill store. Itâs amazing what incredible name-brand clothing you can find! If nothing is holding you back, consider moving to a new city for a fresh start, signing up for an overseas mission trip, or simply finding a new church that welcomes you with love and open arms.
Whatever you think of, if it will bring you refreshment and enjoyment, make time for it. Then make it part of your weekly or monthly routine. Donât feel guilty for making yourself a priority. You deserve it and owe it to yourself to take care of yourself.
