CHAPTER 7

Charles’s suggestion that they accompany Lucy to London

to shop for books was unexpected, but not unwelcome. Daniel

had returned to school with a little trepidation, feeling foolish

for hiding from them. But Charles hadn’t mentioned it at all.

Everything seemed entirely normal between them, except for

the occasional spark of lust in Charles’s eyes. Lust that was

not directed toward Lucy.

Daniel always jumped at the chance to go to the city for a

few days, but this time he didn’t care if they were going to

London, Cardiff, or Timbuktu. It didn’t matter where they

went, because he only wanted the chance to see how this

would work. Would he be jealous if Charles kissed Lucy?

Lovers always had their own language—in words and body—

would he feel left out? Would he be a third wheel in an

already established relationship? It was always hard for Daniel

to start relationships, to build and cultivate the kind of trust

and companionship necessary for a successful partnership.

Being a third in a ménage à trois added a whole new level of

difficulty to the situation.

But the decision to explore the situation was not unlike his

decision to go back to the coven for a second ritual. He trusted

Charles and Lucy. He was curious. He wanted to see what the

new arrangement could offer him. It took a bit of courage, but

Daniel’s life had been so dull and quiet, he had plenty of

courage on reserve.

So that was how he found himself on a crowded London

street, a pace behind Lucy as she scurried from shop to shop,

his arm brushing against Charles’s as they walked.

“Does she cheat and use magic for this?” Daniel asked

lightly. “Some sort of book-finding spell?”

The amused smile was genuine. “I thought that, the first

time she came back with a rare edition I’d been about ready to

give up on ever finding. But, no, Lucy has a rare gift for being

able to spot a hidden treasure.” Charles glanced sideways at

Daniel, his eyes warm. “Lucky for both of us, I imagine.”

Daniel smiled, a little sheepishly. “Yes, that is a good bit

of luck. If you don’t mind me asking, what do you do with the

magic, besides conduct orgiastic rituals?”

“Nothing nearly as interesting,” Charles teased. “Most

often, we use the magic to help maintain balance. A healing

spell here and there, perhaps right the occasional wrong. Lucy

has a propensity for using hers to save the flowers she keeps

killing in my garden, for instance.”

Daniel’s smile widened at the vision of Lucy fluttering

around Charles’s garden, anxiously murmuring spells to save

the greenery. And he knew she would be most concerned

about saving the flowers because they were living things, not

because she was worried about Charles’s reaction to their

wilting.

“What about corrupting innocent young literature

professors?” Daniel joked.

Lucy pulled open the narrow door of one of the many

bookshops that lined Charing Cross Road, and Charles caught

it to pull it wider in order for Daniel to follow her inside. “I

didn’t need magic for that,” he said. “I just had to open your

eyes to possibilities you hadn’t considered yet.”

“You’ve certainly done that,” Daniel said under his breath

before entering the shop.
