ORDER NEUROPTERA: LACEWINGS

Insect Interactions

There are innumerable interactions among the orders, and this is a dependable one to observe. Lacewing (Neuroptera) larvae eat ants (Hymenop-tera) that herd aphids (Hemiptera). Ants enjoy the sweet honeydew the aphids excrete and will even “milk,” or stroke, the aphids for it. The ants are farming the aphids, corralling them, and even moving them to fresh plants.

MATERIALS

• Magnifying glass

• Your field notebook

• Pencil

STEP 1: Find a field of blooming goldenrod, sunflowers, Queen Anne’s lace, or corn, and look closely at the stems for the green aphids, ants, and lacewings (fig. 1). You will enjoy watching their interactions.
