When Girls Struggle with Feeling “Different”
This story highlights the struggles children go through when they feel different. The strategies deal with a visible difference (race, ethnicity, physical disability, and so on). The strategies also apply to a more hidden difference (religion, learning differences, differences in family structure such as divorce, and so on).
Do Whispers Mean Trouble?
Carley is an outgoing biracial second grader who speaks Japanese (her mother’s native language) at home. Carley loves it when Mom comes to eat lunch with her at school. One Tuesday in early November, Carley’s mom arrived just as Carley and her best friend, Jordan, began planning what to play together at recess. To help her mother fit at the table, Carley squeezed close to another girl and introduced Jordan to her mom. Carley thought she saw Jordan’s smile diminish. Jordan shifted in her seat when Carley and her mom started chatting in Japanese.
Suddenly, Jordan took her tray and politely excused herself, saying, “It will be more comfortable if the table isn’t so squished,” before walking over to go sit with Julia at a nearby table. Carley noticed that a number of her other friends coming out of the hot lunch line went to sit with Jordan and Julia. She saw Jordan whispering to Julia, and she swore she saw them stealing glances at her and her mom. When Carley saw them laugh, she was certain they were talking about her. She privately begged her mom to take her to the library for recess. That evening, Carley told her mom she knew Jordan was whispering to Julia about her at lunch. She burst into tears, saying, “I saw her talking to the other girls about me as well. They’re all making fun of me. I can’t go to school tomorrow. Please don’t make me!”
