Bamboo is common in the rainforests and its uses are virtually limitless: the chambers often store life-giving water; it can be used to make ladders for crossing streams or climbing sheer rock faces, and it is usually strong enough to fashion into a raft should you need to travel downriver. Living vines can be used to lash the bamboo logs together.

The canopy provides reasonable shelter so your priority at night is to stay warm and dry, and, to do that, you’ll need to be able to make fire. Finding dry tinder in the jungle may seem impossible but it can be found in the burrows of various animals or in the centre of dead branches. It rains most evenings in the cloud forests so make sure you collect your tinder, kindling and larger logs, and then light your fire before dusk. If you have no flint, lighter or matches, it’s probably not worth trying to make fire as the disappointment of failure will lower your morale.
