Chapter 14

Quinton

I am not at all surprised to see Raven walking down the front steps of her house. The guys are at the warehouse, doing what they do best. And I’m here, doing what I do best. Watching Raven while the guys are working. Not that I mind. Knowing that I can keep her safe when they can’t gives me as much peace of mind as it does for them.

Raven looks around, as if she's checking to see if anyone is watching before slipping into her mom’s car. I take this as my cue to leave my watch post from the shadows of the backyard where her bedroom window faces and get into my car that’s parked in the back alley.

Quickly, with my headlights off, I drive to the end of the road and wait until Raven passes me. Once she does, I wait a few seconds before pulling out to follow her. I already know where she’s going. The guys should have been home hours ago, but this job was bigger than we expected. Lincoln texted me to tell me that they had a squealer, and it was going to be a long night.

I’ve noticed Raven has been starting to be more curious about what’s going on around her, more than she used to be. I knew it wouldn’t be long until she decided to take matters into her own hands and get the answers she needed.

That’s why instead of stopping her as she heads toward the warehouse while the guys are knee-deep into they’re work, I’m following to make sure she stays safe until she sees the truth with her own eyes.

The guys have their reasons for not telling her what they really do, and I understand why they would want to protect her for as long as they can. The life we live isn’t for everyone. It’s dangerous and messy. But they’re seeing her through the eyes of the boys who fell in love with her at first sight.

I’m seeing things through the eyes of someone who fell over time, from a distance. There’s a lot I see that they don’t. They’re afraid that once she sees the monsters that lurk within each of them that she'll run and hide.

But I know better. Raven is hiding her own demons, making her the best fit for them. I don’t think Raven will hide. Instead, she’ll embrace this new life she’s about to walk into.

She parks the car on the side of the road, just before reaching the warehouse. I watch as she takes off running in its direction. I pull up a little further, parking as close to the trees as I can.

Getting out, I watch her looking around, trying to find the best way to get inside.

Funny thing is, it won't be all that hard because this place isn’t heavily guarded. No one has ever had the balls to step foot on any of our properties. Not when the end result is going face to face with Lincoln.
